Lafayette (La) –The band played on, so to speak, when James Bowie High School Jazz Ensemble was selected Outstanding Band in the first-ever Louisiana Essentially Ellington Regional High School Jazz Ensemble Festival. The James Bowie band competed against 10 other bands in a day-long competition held at U.L.L.'s Angelle Hall on Saturday, April 24.
Band Director Ryan Thomas led the ensemble, which hails from Austin, TX.
In addition to winning the festival’s top slot, the James Bowie Jazz Ensemble performed on the Festival International Popeye’s stage with noted jazz trombonist Andre Hayward.
Andre Hayward is an educator extremely gifted trombonist who has been compared to the late musician J.J. Johnson. He performed with trumpeter Roy Hargrave for a European tour and record with singer/bandleader Betty Carter for five years in her acclaimed "Jazz Ahead" program with other notable performers including; Joe Williams, Slide Hampton, John Lewis, Mingus Dynasty Big Band, Gerald Wilson, Kirk Whalum, Jimmy Heath, The Duke Ellington Orchestra and Illinois Jacquet's Big Band. In addition to serving as adjunct trombone professor at The New England Conservatory and New York University, Hayward has performed as a member of The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and with The San Francisco Jazz Collective led by Joshua Redman.
Sharpstown High School Jazz Ensemble from Houston, TX and Temple High School’s “Temple Blues Band” from Temple, TX received honorable mention recognition. Several soloists, performers and sections were recognized for outstanding performances. Sharpstown High trombonist Thomas Gomez was recognized as Judges’ Pick and received a scholarship from the ULL School of Music.
The Louisiana Essentially Ellington Festival is the official southeastern regional in a series of regional competitions that are part of the Essentially Ellington program at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The non-competitive festival is one of its kind in the country that offers high school jazz ensembles the opportunity to play original transcripts of recordings from some of the biggest names in jazz music including the Duke Ellington Orchestra, “The King” Benny Carter and the music of Mary Lou Williams, including the arrangements she wrote for the Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman Orchestras.
The Louisiana Essentially Ellington Regional High School Jazz Band Festival received generous support from Popeye’s, and Popeye’s marketing director Angie Doyle announced the winner.
