Lafayette, La- Flowers that bloom live on stage, vibraphone and saxophones ringing out the sweet sounds of jazz, and the fiery passion of Flamenco music and dance are just some of the offerings the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana (PASA) will present as part of its 2010/2011 performance season. Series tickets are on sale now through the Heymann Performing Arts Center.
The PASA series kicks off on Tuesday, October 19 with Momix, the acclaimed company of dancer-illusionists led by famed choreographer Moses Pendleton. Their newest work “Botanica” takes an incredible journey through the natural world. “Botanica” explores the delicate world of nature through a spectacular blend of theatre, athleticism and movement bringing show goers along on a fantastic visual journey. The Times Union says, “Earthly and otherworldly at once— (Botanica) it is a magnificent vision of the everyday miracles around us.”
Stefon Harris and Blackout performs on November 19 with a night of jazz music that even the most seasoned jazz fan will find exhilarating. National Public Radio says, “This is what the next generation of jazz masters sound like today.” Led by Grammy-nominated vibraphonist/composer Stefon Harris and, his group of multi-talented young musicians, this troupe of music mercenaries, adept in the language of jazz, and take the strut of soul music and the ruckus of breakbeats, go-go and new-jack rhythms to swinging new heights
Jackie Lyle, PASA Executive director says, “By purchasing a series ticket and attending PASA’s events, you are ensuring that you have the best seat in the house for each show.” Lyle continued, “Momix and Stefon Harris and Blackout are two exciting shows guaranteed to have show-goers wanting more.”
On January 26, the series continues with a show-stopping performance by Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca. Noche Flamenca makes their Acadiana debut with their narrative performance of La Strada, inspired by the story and film made famous by acclaimed filmmaker Federico Fellini. Noche Flamenca is an unparalleled ensemble of dancers, singers and guitarists internationally known for their authentic, dramatic performances of traditional flamenco dance. The Berkshire Review for the Arts says, “Noche Flamenca… you know you have to see it because it is famous, but you have no idea how transporting it will be until you arrive.”
The March 24 performance of Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer features three of the top musicians/composers in classical, bluegrass, and world music. This one night-only performance will feature music from their newest album The Melody of Rhythm. The Tennessean.com says, “The trio of players, each a master of his instrument, has created some marvelous music that stretches our ideas of rhythm.”
The season ends on April 20 with the creative genius of The Aluminum Show. The international sensation combines movement, dance and visual theater in a unique stage show created through the use of special effects, and silver industrial materials. This family-friendly performance, takes audiences to a luminous and reflective world created by inanimate objects brought to life. Theatermania.com says, "Kids will go crazy over this entire silver-and-black spectacle, but the best family magic occurs when an audience member is brought onstage, wrapped in foil, and eaten by an aluminum duct. He simply disappeared!"
“The entertainers we are bringing to Lafayette are some of the most innovative, talented musicians, dancers and performers in the world, says Lyle. “Now is the time to buy tickets to ensure that you and your family experience the best that the performing arts world has to offer.”
